This past Monday, many were asking the question, “where were you on September 11, 2001 at 8:46 am?”
I was in my office at First Baptist Walterboro talking to a young man about being baptized. As he left my office, my secretary told us that a plane had hit the World Trade Center in New York City. She already was at a T.V. set up in our conference room tuned into the news. No one really knew what had happened for sure.
But soon the story began to unfold as we watched the second plane hit the South tower and then news that the Pentagon has also been hit. We were under attack. I could not help but think if this is what it was like when the news of Pearl Harbor broke.
To say it was “impactful” would be and understatement. The images of that day are still fresh in my mind. This past Monday the images of that dreadful day were flashed across all news networks. Once again my emotions of anger, sorrow, grief, and sadness were reignited. It was as if it were happening in real time all over again.
I feel the same way about the moment I professed my faith in Christ. September 11, 2001 was 22 years ago. My life changing experience with Christ took place 59 years ago. I can still see the images of that day. On the front row of Peniel Baptist Church (a store front church in what use to be a hardware store), after the service, I took my step of faith. I still recall the emotions of fear, joy, and satisfaction. That is all to say that moment in my life made an impact. A lifelong impact.
Every now and then we would do good to look back on those moments in time that dramatically impacted our lives. I hope and pray that a life changing encounter with Christ is among yours.
This is my story…
