Jan and I like to walk.
Recently our schedules have been such that we have just not had the time. There is nothing better than a good walk to help clear the mind. Every now and then I walk the trail at Sweetapple Elementary School. I can get my steps in and find it relaxing.
Recently I noticed that the trail was becoming more and more cluttered with cans, food containers, and trash that others were leaving behind. I hate to see a beautiful spot, whether it be the walking trail, the beach, or any other nature spot ruined by trash left by careless others.
Sometimes I find myself picking up some of the trash in putting it in a local trash container (imagine that–trash containers are provided!). Small items I sometimes put in my pocket and carry home to my trash cans. Nothing earth shattering, but I do get the feeling I am helping, at least a little bit.
Not too long ago, I saw a man coming toward me as I was walking. He kept stopping and bending over to pick up something. As he got closer, I saw that he was carrying a plastic shopping bag. He was picking up trash, just like me! I thought, what a good idea to bring a bag!
It turned out that he was collecting aluminum cans for a recycling program at his church. He explained how much they get for each pound and then said “It’s a great way to make money for some of our programs–and clean up the roads at the same time!”
Now I know what some of you are thinking–“The pastor is going to ask us to start picking up cans on the side of the road.” No, I am not going to do that (although it may be a really good idea). Think about it–1) it raises money, 2) it would provide some much needed exercise for some, and 3) it would clean up a bit!
I guess my point is this…What are you doing in your everyday life that is positive and productive. What has changed in the world since you passed by? As you are walking thru life are you leaving a lot of trash behind or are you doing your part to be and do something worthwhile?
This is my story…
