We met him on our Mission Serve trip to Puerto Rico this past summer. He actually was a part of Bruce Schwendenman's squad. He came each night to our group devotion time after worship and spent Wednesday afternoon as our tour guide to Juana Diaz and Ponce. We went to the waterfall just outside of Juana Diaz, had supper at the mall in Ponce, and explored all of the things to see on the square in Ponce. It was a great night and Abner had quickly become a part of our North River Group
This past November Jan and I offered Abner the spare room in our house and to become a part of our family. He had already been planning to come stateside to further his education. We wanted to give him the opportunity to explore all of his options. It has been a great adventure to say the least. We have worshipped together, played together, grown together, and learned a lot of new things. We have learned to eat beans and rice and he has learned to drink sweet tea. Well something like sweet tea. OK, he prefers Lipton instant tea which is not real tea at all!!
Our family has come to love his family and look forward to hearing news on a daily basis from Puerto Rico. Even as I write this Steve's Story I am drinking coffee from Puerto Rico in a new coffee mug from Puerto Rico.
I say all of this to say--you never know what plans God has for you when He calls you to go. Well over a year ago our college kids began to talk about going to Puerto Rico in the summer of 2017. Little did we know that God's plan for us would extend far beyond the one week we served in Juana Diaz.
And now this milestone!! Employee of the month at J.C. Penney! We have laughed about this since we all know that this is just a drop in the bucket compared to Abner's future. He is a bright, kind, compassionate young man whose future is filled with wonderful milestones. God has prepared him for a future that we can only imagine. There is no doubt in my mind that Abner will one day take his past and apply it to his future and great things will happen.
Employee of the month at J.C. Penney does not even compare to hearing the words "Well done my good and faithful servant!"
We love you Abner and are blessed to be a part of your journey.
This is my story...
